Aston Villa gave a good account of themselves against Chelsea on Saturday, despite ultimately falling to a 2-1 defeat.
The Villans’ goal drought was ended when defender Jores Okore cancelled out Eden Hazard’s opening goal but defender Branislav Ivanovic scored the winner to stretch Chelsea’s lead at the top of the Premier League.
For all Villa’s fighting spirit they managed just a single shot on target and they need more creativity in the midfield as well as more confidence up front.
One player who was brought in to offer that creativity was Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, but the England international has flattered to deceive this season and against Chelsea he offered little.
While Villa’s on-loan midfielder had a passing accuracy of 88 per cent, only six of his 37 passes were played forward. He also failed to play a single key pass, while he did not win a single tackle or interception.

Andi Weimann & Tom Cleverley have been subbed more times in games than I've had hot dinners. When 70 mins approaches, they get nervous....— Crippy Cooke (@Crippy4Villa) February 7, 2015
I'm pretty sure all Tom Cleverley can do in a match is pass it sideways or backwards 5 yards— Elliott Jones (@ejonzee) February 7, 2015
