Report: Tottenham Hotspur interested in signing Kevin Wimmer in the summer

FC Koln defender Kevin Wimmer is reportedly on the radar of Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing FC Koln defender Kevin Wimmer in the summer transfer window, according to The Mirror.

The British paper claims that the Premier League outfit’s manager Mauricio Pochettino will “renew his interest” in the 22-year-old, who was on their radar in the January transfer window.

FC Koln executive director Alexander Wehrle told German magazine Kicker earlier this month that Spurs were interested in Wimmer.

However, Wehrle made it clear that the Bundesliga club will not sell him, and that the youngster will remain part of the team until the end of the season (click here to read more).

According to The Mirror, Pochettino was prepared to move for the youngster in the January window had Younes Kabul or Vlad Chiriches left Spurs.

Should Tottenham make summer move for Wimmer?

If Tottenham manager Pochettino does decide to let captain Kaboul and Chiriches leave in the summer, then he will need players to replace them.

Although neither Kaboul nor Chiriches has played much so far this campaign and Tottenham have a large squad, the Argentine boss will need to reinforce his team for injuries and suspensions.

Top defenders are not easy to find in transfer windows, but Pochettino has shown this season that he is willing to put his faith in young players.

Wimmer is a talented young defender who is also an Austria Under-21 international. He does not have much top-level experience, but then again, Harry Kane was also in and out of the Tottenham first team until this campaign.

If Tottenham do sign Wimmer, then they have to be clear that they are signing a player for the future, not to be an instant success.
