Photos: Danny Welbeck clashes with Danny Rose during north London derby

The Arsenal forward was at odds with the Tottenham Hotspur defender throughout yesterday's heated derby.

A north London derby rarely needs any added spice. The tension between Tottenham and Arsenal fans is palpable - and that often boils down to the players.

In the case of Danny Welbeck and Danny Rose, it most certainly did yesterday afternoon, as the 24-year-old Arsenal forward repeatedly clashed with Spurs' left-back.

Rose, much smaller in stature than Welbeck, often exchanged strong words with the Gunners man and was pushed to the ground during battle.

So visible was the tension between the two players that the Arsenal forward was, at one stage, switched over to the opposite flank. So effective was Rose going forward, however, that Welbeck - with his exceptionally high work-rate - was the only man capable of really curtailing him.

It was the Tottenham star who had the last laugh, of course, as a Harry Kane double cancelled out the Mesut Ozil opener that 24-year-old Welbeck worked so hard to create for Arsenal.

But he'll be sure to check the marks and bruises left by his north London rival in the coming days. The Spurs man met his match at White Hart Lane and, were the duo's team-mates not around to stop tempers from boiling over, Rose could very well have found himself coming to blows with Welbeck.
