Chelsea stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League table last night with a hard fought 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park. Eden Hazard gave Chelsea an early lead but the game was far from over, as Villa put in one of their best performances in weeks.
They even managed to score. The tricky Carles Gil found some room on the right before swinging a delightful ball into the box for Jores Okore to finally break Villa’s horrific run of form in front of goal.
The Danish defender’s strike gave Villa hope but in the end they had only themselves to blame for defeat. They had ample chances to clear the ball from their danger zone in the build-up to the Chelsea winner.
In the end the ball fell kindly to Branislav Ivanovic, who smashed home an excellent half-volley into the top corner of Brad Guzan’s net.
It was also a special occasion for Chelsea as fans got to see their latest recruit for the first time. Juan Cuadrado, signed from Fiorentina on Transfer Deadline Day, came on in the 80th minute to make his Chelsea debut.
With Manchester City drawing at home to Hull City it is a result that sees Chelsea go to seven points clear in the table, as the Premier League title sinks ever closer into reach.
