Sunderland round-up: Early team news; Poyet on possible league debut

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Sunderland

Sunderland travel to the Liberty Stadium this weekend for a Premier League clash against Swansea City.

The Black Cats are currently 14th in the table with 23 points from 23 games while the Swans are 10 points better off in ninth position.

In early team news, the BBC reports that Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson are both being monitored by Sunderland’s medical staff for groin and thumb injuries respectively.

Connor Wickham, Billy Jones, Will Buckley and Emanuele Giaccherini will also have late fitness tests.

In other news, Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has been speaking to the Chronicle Live about young player Liam Agnew.

The 19-year-old midfielder made his debut for Sunderland against Fulham in last week’s FA Cup fourth round replay and he could follow that up with a first outing in the top flight.

“It was nice to see him playing and celebrating in front of 4,000 fans, who were spectacular by the way,” Poyet said. “That will make him feel part of it. Who knows what will happen today.”

Agnew has made 26 appearances for the club’s under-21 side, scoring six goals in that time, and it will be interesting to see what chances he gets in the remainder of this season.
