Manchester United are reportedly ready to sit down with one of their star players and discuss a new contract.

According to a report from Goal.com, Manchester United are about to step up negotiations with goalkeeper David de Gea regarding a potential new contract at Old Trafford.

The Spanish international has been nothing short of sensational in recent times, but with a current deal that expires in the summer of 2016, the 24-year-old’s long-term future remains in considerable doubt.

De Gea is no longer the nervous stopper he was when he first arrived at United. In fact he is now widely regarded as one of the best ‘keepers in the game, so it is no surprise that manager Louis van Gaal wants to tie him to the club for longer. The only surprise is that it has not been done already.

The Goal report claims United opened exploratory talks with De Gea last season but in this campaign they have adopted what the story calls “a watching brief”.

However, that is reportedly about to change, with Goal claiming discussions thus far have been more to sound out what United and the player want in terms of a new deal and that the first round of concrete talks are set to take place soon.

The risk of losing De Gea will grow with every passing day that he does not put pen to paper on a new deal, but if the latest story is true, the Spaniard could soon have an offer on the table with an alleged £50million release-clause and a considerable pay increase to boot.
