Manchester United have announced their Player of the Month for January on their official website.
The award has gone to Ecuadorian international Antonio Valencia following a string of fine performances on the right flank.
Valencia was in the running along with summer signings Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, with the Netherlands international impressing in particular following his return from injury.
But Valencia secured the prize and in comments made after the announcement he revealed just how vital January had been for the club.
“It was a very important month, not just for me but for us as a team,” he said. “We won some crucial points and we aim to keep improving and keep winning as the season reaches its climax.”
United played six matches in January and Valencia was involved on four of those occasions, featuring in victories against Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City as well as the FA Cup fourth round tie against Cambridge United and the surprise home defeat to Southampton.
While United climbed back up to third in the table they still have plenty of work to do if they want to secure a top-four finish, with the clubs directly below them showing no signs of letting up.
