Jermaine Jenas calls defensive selection 'weird' but Eric Dier proves his worth

Tottenham Hotspur defeated Arsenal 2-1 with Eric Dier at the back.

Tottenham defeated Arsenal in the North London derby earlier today. The 2-1 win came courtesy of yet another match-winning performance from striker Harry Kane. He bagged a second half brace to earn a win for the home side.

It was an excellent performance from Tottenham, but one which started strangely in regards to Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino’s team selection, especially in defence.

In recent weeks the partnership of Federico Fazio and Jan Vertonghen has been working extremely well for Spurs, but for this game Poch dropped his Argentine countryman for young Englishman Eric Dier.

Seemingly the decision was made with pace in mind, as Arsenal’s counter attack was rightly feared by Spurs. But it was a move that surprised one former Tottenham player. Jermaine Jenas now works as a pundit but in his footballing career spent eight years at White Hart Lane and played almost 200 games for the club.

He Tweeted before the game:

In the end Dier had quite an impressive game. He played Mesut Ozil onside for the opening goal but it was not something he could be blamed for as he was tracking back after Arsenal broke on the break.

But for the rest of the game Dier again showed that, at his preferred centre-half position, he is a stunning prospect for the future.

Even if he made Jenas have his doubts.
