Tottenham Hotspur came from a goal down to defeat Arsenal 2-1 in the North London derby on Saturday.

Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that he was surprised by Tottenham Hotspur’s performance against Arsenal on Saturday.

Spurs came from a goal down to get the better of their North London rivals 2-1 at White Hart Lane to enhance their chances of a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

Mesut Ozil put Arsenal ahead as early as the 11th minute, but the hosts launched a stirring comeback to win the encounter and pick up the three points.

Harry Kane scored both his side’s goals in yet another very good and encouraging performance from Tottenham, which caught the club’s former forward Crooks by surprise.

“I didn't see this Tottenham performance coming, if I'm honest,” the 56-year-old told BBC Sport. “But I'm very pleased.”

Crooks also praised Kane for his heroics and said: “Kane’s goals have been very, very good. And I want to spend oodles of time talking about his second goal, because technically you will not see a better finish.

“He leapt, arches his back and put the ball right back to where is came from. Unbelievable. A beautiful goal. When you're on top of your game you enjoy a purple patch. You cannot explain it, and everything just goes for you.”

Was Tottenham’s performance a surprise?

No, Tottenham’s display should not have come as a surprise to anyone, mainly because the players have it in themselves to step up when need be. As they did on Saturday.

Admittedly, once Arsenal went 1-0 up so early in the game, there would have been doubts, but Spurs quickly showed that they were not going to go down easily.

Over the course of the season, Tottenham have shown time and time again that they are capable of staging comebacks, and they did the same against Arsenal.

Statistically, Tottenham were the better side too. Mauricio Pochettino’s team had 56% of the possession, 23 shots of which eight were on target and 10 corners, while Arsenal had 44% possession, seven shots of which three were on target and just three corners.
