Aston Villa round-up: Early team news and unwanted record approaching

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Aston Villa

Aston Villa welcome Premier League leaders Chelsea to Villa Park this weekend as Paul Lambert’s side attempt to pull further away from the relegation zone.

Villa are currently 16th in the table, just three points outside the bottom three, and they will have to put in the performance of the season to take anything against Jose Mourinho’s men.

In early team news, the BBC reports that Villa defender Ron Vlaar should return for the first time since injuring himself on New Year’s Day.

Joe Cole is also available having recovered from a hamstring injury while loanee Scott Sinclair has been tipped to feature.

In other news, the Birmingham Mail reports that Villa are closing in on a very unwelcome record.

The newspaper reports that Lambert’s side have just two weeks to go before they break the record for the Premier League’s longest goal drought.

Villa have not scored in the top flight for 612 minutes and they have until the 47th minute in their upcoming game against Stoke City to put that right or go down in the record books for the wrong reasons.
