Tottenham Hotspur could try and exploit an Arsenal weakness which was obvious earlier this season.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino would have been debating the best way to play against Arsenal this weekend for most of this week.
While Tottenham have the home advantage this weekend, it’s going to be a tricky game because of the quality players Arsenal have in terms of controlling possession and creating chances.
The best approach could be the most dangerous one, designed to exploit a weakness in Arsenal’s defence which was exposed earlier in the season.
Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were critical of Arsenal’s defence, as quoted by London24, at the back end of last year for the way they pressed and moved their defensive line far too high up the pitch.
That led to Arsenal leaving a lot of space in behind their defensive line, which left them exposed on the counter attack.
Where Tottenham could benefit is by inviting that Arsenal pressure and trusting their defence.
It’s a dangerous tactic considering the quality in the Arsenal attack, but Spurs do have the players who could take advantage of that space if they can trick Arsenal forward.
If it’s a tactic that Mauricio Pochettino wants his team to try then the back four has to be solid.
If Spurs concede inviting that pressure onto them, it will leave the boss with a lot of egg all over his face.
However, if Tottenham defend well, counter attack effectively and make the most of their chances, they could be in a great position by the end of the weekend.
The side will have to counter the urges of the home crowd if they decide to absorb the pressure, because Spurs fans will want to see the team get at Arsenal and rip them apart.
However, a clinical, careful but risky approach may be the best option.
