Arsenal and Manchester United are both interested in signing German international Benedikt Howedes this summer, report The Mirror.
The Gunners are however the keener of the two at present the paper claim, detailing that they sent scouts to watch him in action this week for Schalke against Bayern Munich.
It was a worthwhile trip as he helped the defence keep the score down against Pep Guardiola's prolific side, even scoring a goal at the other end in the 1-1 draw.
Arsenal are still keen on the World Cup winner despite signing Gabriel Paulista in January. The reason why is due to concerns over Laurent Koscielny's fitness, having seen him miss sizeable part of the season earlier this campaign.
Would Howedes be a good fit?
Howedes is not only experienced, but has versatility on his side too. He plays predominantly for Schalke as a centre-back, but has also featured at left-back this season.
This flexibility would also surely appeal to Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, with the Red Devils seeing their defence stretched at times this season.
Arsenal may have an edge due to the German internationals already at the club, including Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker.
Would he leave Germany?
There is a good chance either club would be able to tempt the 26-year-old away. He said, reported by SkySports last summer, that he wanted to move abroad for a new challenge, and to experience new culture, at some stage in his career.
With Bayern Munich turning the Bundesliga title race into a procession once again, already eight points clear, the temptation to move to a new league which may be more open could also be a factor.
