Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini has told the Northern Echo what the team has been working on in training this week.
The Argentine has told the paper that the side has been working hard in training as they look to build on the impressive win away at Hull City last weekend.
“We are working very hard during the week, about tactics and shape, and I think we showed that on the pitch in the second half against Hull,” said Coloccini.
“We have confidence in them (John Carver and his staff), and it's important that the players have confidence. We are going to work together.”
The tactics have to change against Stoke this weekend because they’re a very different threat to Hull.
Stoke pose a greater physical threat to Newcastle and as a result head coach John Carver needs to adjust things. The defence need to be a little more resilient with Stoke likely to play more directly.
The midfield also has to show plenty of strength in the middle of the park, getting stuck in early and announcing their presence.
However, the midfielders can’t go flying into challenges if it jeopardises the shape of the rest of the team.
The temptation for Newcastle after last weekend will be to attack hard after such an impressive result against Hull, but arguably the better approach is to play disciplined football, cut out Stoke’s physical threat and make the most of any half chances.
