Collymore: Why I'm expecting a big Everton performance this weekend

Former Liverpool player Stan Collymore feels the underdogs tag could work for Everton this weekend.

Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has explained in his Bleacher Report column why he feels Everton could have an advantage for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

Everton head into the game as underdogs, but they have home advantage and Collymore feels they may well pull off a positive result this weekend.

“In a derby atmosphere, I'm actually expecting a big Everton performance. They are such underdogs going into the game that they can just go and play,” wrote Collymore.

The job for Roberto Martinez is to try and take the pressure off of his team in the build up to the game.

Everton need to try and impose themselves on Liverpool during the early phase of the game because the Reds are arguably at their best when they come flying out of the traps against difficult teams.

That’s a common tactic used by clubs to stifle and shock their opponents before they can settle down into a game and start playing their best football.

The job for the players is going to be defending properly because that’s been a weakness of the team this season; only Newcastle above the Toffees in the table have conceded more goals.

If Everton can defend well and keep a clean sheet, there’s no reason they can’t cash in and make the most of their chances at the other end.
