Clive Allen has told talkSPORT’s Drivetime show that Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor can play a crucial role in the North London derby today.
The Togo international has been included in the Tottenham squad for this afternoon’s Premier League clash against Arsenal at White Hart Lane.
Adebayor has only recently returned to the Spurs side after suffering with fitness issues for a few weeks but could feature against his former employers on Saturday.
The 30-year-old is unlikely to start against the Gunners, but ex-Tottenham forward Allen believes that he can prove to be important in the game if he wants to.
“There are games when he is unplayable,” the 53-year-old told talkSPORT. “He is a player who frustrates you because of the ability that he has.
“He can be a world beater and there’s a lot of frustration that comes with working, supporting and looking at getting the best out of Adebayor in your team.
“We’ve not seen it often enough for Spurs. If he fancies it and he wants to play a big part in the game then he can win the game for Spurs, it is as simple as that. Unfortunately I think it’s unlikely given the way he has performed for Spurs so far.”
Can Adebayor step up?
The problem with Adebayor is that he is too inconsistent, and he probably was never that good anyway.
The former Manchester City striker played well for Spurs during a loan spell in the 2011-12 season, but since then he has flattered to deceive.
Allen seems to rate the former Monaco striker’s natural talent, but the problem is that Adebayor needs to put more effort into his game and be tactically strong.
Perhaps against his former club Arsenal, Adebayor could play a role if he comes on as a substitute and gets the support of the Tottenham fans.
