Chelsea departee voted January’s best buy in European football

Torres Goal

Ex-Chelsea and Liverpool star Fernando Torres was voted as the best signing in European football in the January transfer window.

Fernando Torres was voted in a survey conducted by UEFA as the best signing in the January transfer window ahead of the likes of Andre Schurrle, Xherdan Shaqiri and Juan Cuadrado.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported the results of the survey, and had the ex-Chelsea and Liverpool attacker at the top of the pile.

Wilfried Bony, Seydou Doumbia, Shaqiri and Schurrle completed the survey’s top five, but the Blues January acquisition of Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina failed to make the list.

The 30-year-old forward officially transferred from Chelsea to AC Milan before making the move on loan to Atletico Madrid in January. However, the Spaniard’s form for the side he earned his footballing apprenticeship with in the first place is most likely the reason he topped the charts in the vote.

In his seven appearances for Atleti since his loan move, which include three games against Barcelona and two against Real Madrid, he has scored three goals – all coming in the Copa Del Rey competition.

Inter Milan new-boy Shaqiri has played five games for his new side, scoring one in the process, but has only come off the pitch as a winner in one of those five games.

Seydou Doumbia, who moved from CSKA Moscow to AS Roma, and Wilfried Bony are yet to feature for their new clubs due to the African Cup of Nations. While, a deadline day move for Schurrle meant he had to watch from the stands in Wolfsburg’s midweek game.

Surprisingly, Cuadrado, who is arguably the Premier League’s highest profile addition made in January, failed to make the list, perhaps too late for consideration.
