Reported West Ham United target Doria leaves Olympique Marseille

Linked with a move to the Premier League last month, Olympique Marseille defender Doria has left the Ligue 1 club according to Marcelo Bielsa.

Brazilian defender Doria has left Olympique Marseille, with reports suggesting that the stopper is heading to Sao Paolo on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old defender moved to the Ligue 1 giants from Botafogo for £4.4 million over the summer but struggled to hold down a first-team place under L’OM manager Marcelo Bielsa.

West Ham United emerged as contenders to sign the South American youngster in the January transfer window, with TalkSport claiming Sam Allardyce was keen to recruit the Brazilian on loan.

However the Hammers failed to complete a deal for the player prior to the close of the window with Tutto Mercato now claiming the defender is heading to Brazil and Sao Paolo.

Bielsa confirmed that Doria had left the club in a press conference reported by L’Equipe.

West Ham’s failure to recruit another centre back before the close of the window has been a source of frustration for the club.

New Zealand international Winston Reid did remain at Upton Park though and despite rumours that the stopper will ultimately depart on the free transfer in the summer, he could nevertheless play an important role in helping the club qualify for Europe.

Doria, meanwhile, will be hoping to rebuild his career back in Brazil.
