Newcastle United’s victory over bitter rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup Youth Cup at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday left one first-team player very happy.
The Newcastle Under-18 side defeated their Sunderland counterparts on penalties to reached the quarter-finals of the competition.
The tie finished goalless in normal time, and even the ensuing 30 minutes of extra time failed to separate the two teams.
The game eventually went to penalties, which Newcastle won 3-1, thanks to the heroics of England Under-19 international goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.
The victory understandably delighted Rolando Aarons, who is currently part of the Newcastle first team after coming through the ranks at the Premier League outfit.
The 19-year-old took to social networking site Twitter to revel in the victory and seemed to take a dig at Sunderland for losing to Newcastle quite frequently.
Given that Aarons plays for the Newcastle first team, many Sunderland fans thought that he was wrong to make the suggestion.
In fact, Sunderland have won their last four matches against Newcastle, which made Aarons’s claims rather confusing.
However, the 19-year-old winger soon made it clear that he was referring to the Youth Cup last season. Below are his tweets.
Congrats to the 18s for beating Sunderland in the youth cup. Some things never change eh?— Rolando Aarons (@R_Aarons16) February 4, 2015
