Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has praised Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of Dele Alli from Milton Keynes Dons on Skysports.com.
North London outfit Tottenham signed the youngster from the League One outfit on a five-and-a-half-year contract on transfer deadline day.
Former Liverpool defender Thompson is impressed with Tottenham’s business, and has hailed the club’s strategy of signing the midfielder so early in his career.
“Alli is one for the future,” the 61-year-old wrote on Skysports.com. “Lots of clubs were chasing him so it’s good business to get this deal out of the way early for £5m.
“The player goes back on loan to MK Dons for the remainder of the season so he’ll still be getting first-team action which is good for the lad.”
It is indeed a smart move from Tottenham to sign Alli right now instead of waiting until the summer or next year.
Although £5m is not a small sum of money, for a club of Tottenham’s stature, it is not much to invest in a young player who has the potential to succeed at the very top level.
If Spurs had waited until the summer or maybe for one or two more years, then they would have had to either pay more for Alli’s signature or fail to sign him altogether.
It was also smart of Tottenham to send Alli, who has scored 12 goals in 27 League One appearances so far this season, back to MK Dons on loan.
That way the youngster can continue his development and play regular football, which is very crucial for him at this stage of his career.
