Manchester City make striker swap in Champions League squad

Manchester City have reportedly opted to include new signing Wilfried Bony in their Champions League squad at the expense of Stevan Jovetic

Stevan Jovetic will play no further part in Manchester City’s Champions League campaign after the club omitted him from their squad for the knockout phase of the competition.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Montenegrin attacker has been left out to make way for January signing Wilfried Bony.

Jovetic made four appearances for Manchester City in the group phase of the competition without scoring a goal and will now be ineligible for the Sky Blues’ last-16 tie with Barcelona later this month.

Bony arrived at the Etihad last month, after completing a £25 million move to the club from Swansea City.

The Ivorian, who scored the most Premier League goals in 2014, is currently in action for Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations and scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals.

The Elephants have already progressed to the final of the tournament in Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, where they will face either the hosts or Ghana.

He is due to return early next week, though it remains to be seen as to whether he and compatriot Yaya Toure will be ready to feature in Manchester City’s trip to Stoke on Wednesday.
