Ian Wright on what Aston Villa players should do v Chelsea

Aston Villa At Villa Park

Aston Villa will be looking to recover from their defeat to Arsenal when they take on Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has written in The Sun about Aston Villa’s current situation.

The Villans are having a hugely disappointing season and are in real danger of suffering relegation from the Premier League.

Villa are 16th in the league table at the moment with just 22 points from 23 matches, only three points above third-from-bottom Hull City.

Paul Lambert’s side had one of their worst games on Sunday, when they were hammered 5-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.

Next up for Villa is a home game against Chelsea on Saturday, and given the Blues’ form, the hosts could suffer yet another heavy defeat.

Wright, a former Arsenal striker, does not expect Villa to win against Chelsea, but he had advised Lambert’s team to step up and give a good account of themselves against the Premier League leaders.

“They should be thinking about rolling up their sleeves and making sure they are never branded bottlers again,” the 51-year-old wrote in The Sun.

“With Chelsea visiting Villa Park on Saturday, they are going to have to recover quickly. If not, it could get even worse — a thumping in front of their own fans.

“Villa may very well get beaten again because they are facing a team many people — myself included — think will win the title.

“But when the final whistle goes, there should be no one in Lambert’s side who comes off the field knowing they could have given more.”

Villa’s chances of winning against Chelsea on Saturday are very slim indeed, but the players should try to at least put a fight.

One suspects that Lambert will be drilling that into his players all week, but the problem is that a manager can so much once the game kicks off.

To get anything from the match against Chelsea, Villa need to be defensively strong and be very robust in midfield.
