Darren Anderton has told The Sport Review that his former club Tottenham Hotspur can finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.
The North London club are currently sixth in the league table with 40 points from 23 matches, just two points behind fourth-placed Southampton.
Spurs are also only two points behind fierce rivals Arsenal, while third-placed Manchester United are just three points ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Anderton, who played for Tottenham from 1992 to 2004, believes that Pochettino’s team have a good chance of a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.
“I do,” the 42-year-old told The Sport Review. “I think there is a good opportunity this year. Some other teams are not performing as well as last season, United, Liverpool for example. So it is a good opportunity.
“It’s all going to be very tough, Arsenal are going well, United are still picking up results, Liverpool is Liverpool but Spurs are definitely in with a chance.”
Can Tottenham finish in top four?
Yes, Tottenham certainly can. Not only are Spurs in good form, but they are also only three points behind third-placed United.
Of course, in years gone by, Tottenham have come close but not close enough, but this term they are looking genuine contenders for a top-four finish.
The main reason for this is that other top-four contenders struggled for points earlier in the season. Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal all made less than impressive starts, but they all are looking good at the moment.
One team that Anderton does not mention as challengers to Tottenham for the top four are Southampton.
The Saints have been the surprise package of the season so far and deservedly find themselves fourth in the standings.
Ronald Koeman’s Southampton have been written off by many, but they continue to defy the odds and pick up the points.
Tottenham cannot take Southampton lightly.
