In the midst of a transfer deadline day that promised much but delivered little, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason gave an interview to the club’s official website that may have been overlooked in favour of the rumours circulating.
Mason was speaking about his Spurs teammate Harry Kane, a striker whose brace against West Bromwich Albion took his goal-tally to the season to 20.
Kane put the game to bed with a penalty, and Mason has since revealed that he told the forward he would hit that figure before a ball had even been kicked.
“It’s funny,” Mason said, “I was sat together with Harry in an ice bath in pre-season and I said to him he’ll get 20 goals this season.
“I didn’t think he’d get it this quickly though.”
The Tottenham forward has exceeded all expectations this campaign, netting those 20 goals in just 33 matches.
It is a remarkable record for a 21-year-old who has recently penned a new long-term deal at White Hart Lane, and not a moment too soon.
While Tottenham’s other forwards, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado, have flattered to deceive this season, Kane has taken the additional weight on his shoulders with apparent ease.
The way things are going, Kane could get well above 30 goals this season, which would make for an interesting conversation the next time he and Mason discuss possible future targets.
