Sunderland supporters are hopeful that Ricky Alvarez's goal against Fulham last night will give him the confidence to make a success of his time at the Stadium of Light.
Alvarez was one of the Black Cats' marquee additions in the summer, with great excitement surrounding his arrival on Wearside, but he has disappointed so far.
The Argentine winger has only made four starts for the side and when he has been on the pitch he has failed to show any of the match-winning ability that was promised when he signed.
However, during Sunderland's 3-1 victory over Fulham, Alvarez was at his very best. The skilful wide man was a constant threat and his goal was evidence of just how good he can be at his best.
Alvarez picked the ball up on the right flank before cutting inside and launching a wonderful shot, which flew into the back of the net.
It was a goal which turned the match in Sunderland's favour and, all of a sudden, there is optimism that Alvarez will kick on now.
Sunderland are in need of a creative spark and the 26-year-old will be hoping that he can fulfil that function for the remainder of the campaign.
Here is the best reaction from Sunderland fans on Twitter to Alvarez's performance:
Alvarez and Graham should now be just as good as getting two new names in the transfer window #Safc— Col Armstrong (@ColArmstrong) February 3, 2015
Can we start playing Alvarez all the time now please? #SAFC— Michael Bartley (@schmeichel1b) February 3, 2015
Hopefully we will now see Alvarez and Giaccherini used more frequently in league action. The former sounded very lively on the radio. #SAFC— Gav Spensley (@GavSpens6) February 3, 2015
Ricky Alvarez appears to have done something. I feel a great disturbance in the force.— Jonathan Wilson (@jonawils) February 3, 2015
