Ricky Alvarez has told the Sunderland Echo he’s determined to use his confidence to show supporters what he can do.
Alvarez bagged a goal in the 3-1 win against Fulham in the FA Cup last night and he’s hoping he can use his performance to his advantage over the next few months.
“We got the reward for a very good performance. I’ve been here for a few months and I’ve had my injury problems,” said Alvarez.
“But now I’m back with a lot of confidence to show the supporters what I can do.”
Alvarez’s performance has to be measured against the quality of Sunderland’s opponents and Fulham struggled to cope with the quality Sunderland had last night.
It’s going to be more difficult for him to stamp his influence on big games in the Premier League but the momentum and confidence he’s created for himself will do him the world of good.
Sunderland manager Gus Poyet needs to play on his determination in training and has to decide whether to give him a start in the match against Swansea.
It would be just his third Premier League start of the season and considering the brand of possession based football the Swans like to play, it’s arguable that Poyet could go with a more defensively minded player.
If he can cash in when he does get chances, his status with supporters will grow and that’s only going to inspire him and make him more motivated over the rest of the season.
