Manchester United player ratings v Cambridge: McNair and Fellaini impress in new roles

Goals from Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo and substitute James Wilson saw Manchester United seal a 3-0 home win over Cambridge in Tuesday night's FA Cup fourth round replay.

David de Gea 6/10 – Was given a scare when Cambridge striker Tom Elliott broke through on goal one-on-one within the opening 50 seconds but otherwise had little to do on the night.

Paddy McNair 7.5/10 – Handled himself with great confidence in an unfamiliar full-back role, getting forward to deliver a number of teasing crosses and shots. Started the move for Mata’s 25th-minute opener, too.

Chris Smalling 6/10 – A quiet came for centre-back, as he dealt with the Cambridge attack with few problems.

Johnny Evans 6/10 – See Smalling.

Marcos Rojo 6.5/10 – Netted his first United goal just after the half hour with a close-range header, while also proving a constant threat down the left flank.

Daley Blind 6/10 – Made a poor backpass that allowed Elliott his chance in the opening stages but recovered from there to help marshal the midfield.

Wayne Rooney 6/10 – Far from outstanding but did what was asked from him in his deeper midfield role, coming close with a couple of chances.

Angel Di Maria 7/10 – Looked at home in his natural left midfield role, troubling the League Two defence with his menacing dribbles.

Juan Mata 7/10 – Got things started with a simple finish from Fellaini’s knock down and kept things ticking over from there.

Marouane Fellaini 7.5/10 – Used up front to take full advantage of his height, the Belgian was United’s star performer on the night. Provided the assist for Mata’s opener and also got involved in the build-up for the second.

Robin van Persie 7/10 – Failed to get on the scoresheet but delivered a neat chip to set up Rojo’s goal. Came close with a few chances and linked-up well with the rest of the attack before going off after the hour.

James Wilson (Van Persie 66) 7/10 – Made an impact soon after his introduction, scoring in the 73rd-minute with a powerful left-footed shot from the edge of the box.

Ander Herrera (Di Maria 71) 6.5/10 – Set up Wilson’s goal after a midfield interception and cutting pass through the Cambridge defence.

Ashley Young (Rojo 81) N/A – Just a pair of fresh legs for the last 10 minutes.
