How new Tottenham signing Dele Alli explained why he supports Liverpool

New Tottenham Hotspur signing Dele Alli has previously admitted to being a Liverpool supporter.

Tottenham Hotspur clinched the signing of MK Dons youngster Dele Alli on transfer deadline day, catching their Premier League competitors napping.

Alli had previously been touted as a target for Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool, reported The Mirror, and one of those he has even admitted to being a supporter of.

In an interview with The Telegraph last year, the England youth international explained that a current star of the Reds helped him decide his allegiance.

He said: "Gerrard was a big reason I began supporting Liverpool. I liked Chelsea as well because of Lampard. I wasn’t as much a fan when I was living with my mum.

"But I moved in with this new family and they were Liverpool fans. It made sense with me to stick with Liverpool. I remember Istanbul, the FA Cup final, and the game against Olympiakos: Gerrard just scoring amazing goals."

Alli has Gerrard's goalscoring nature to his game, for he has netted 12 times this season in League One in 27 appearances.

His Liverpool support certainly didn't prevent him seizing the opportunity to sign a deal with Tottenham, taking to Twitter after the deadline day transfer was confirmed to speak of his delight.

Should Liverpool have pushed harder for him?

The Reds were the team most consistently linked to Alli over the past two seasons, with The Mail claiming last summer Liverpool were in talks with MK Dons over a deal.

With money burning a hole in their figurative pockets after selling Luis Suarez at the time, taking a punt on the highly rated Alli would barely have registered.

Now with Steven Gerrard leaving at the end of the season to join MLS side LA Galaxy, they are on the hunt for a long-term replacement, but now Tottenham have signed Alli, he won't be the answer.
