Arsene Wenger says Bellerin's debut was a bit of a nightmare

Arsene Wenger has hailed the development of defender Hector Bellerin.

Hector Bellerin has begun to make great strides this season, capitalising on a series of events which turned in his favour.

A combination of Mathieu Debuchy's injuries, Carl Jenkinson's loan, and Calum Chambers developing as a centre-back, has given the Spanish teenager opportunities to show why Arsenal snapped him up from Barcelona.

He was excellent once again at the weekend in a comfortable win over Aston Villa, even scoring in the 5-0 win.

Manager Arsene Wenger is delighted with his development, but admits early in the season, his first competitive appearance was not one to remember positively, a 2-0 loss away to Borussia Dortmund.

He told Arsenal.com: "He grows from game to game, he’s more confident and he has that electric pace even in the last minute, to go past people and to get crosses in. Defensively, he has improved a lot.

“Considering his first game, at Dortmund, and what I think of him today, that’s credit to him, because he had a bit of a nightmare away from home in Dortmund."

While Bellerin made more tackles against Dortmund than in the win against a toothless Villa side, the strides he has made elsewhere are clear to see.

As well as getting forward to score his goal, he had a better pass completion rate and won possession back for his side eight times against Villa than at the Westfalenstadion.

Statistics aside, Bellerin simply looks a more composed and confident player than he did that night - a match in which not a single Arsenal player did themselves any credit.

When Debuchy returns, the Frenchman will be expected to reclaim his place, but right now Bellerin is making it difficult to guarantee the summer signing that will be the case.
