Little is expected of the 21-year-old, who spent a three-month loan spell with League Two Plymouth Argyle earlier this season. The report suggests that the defender will take part in United’s Under-21 side, although he could be pressed into making the step up into the first-team should the Red Devils continue to suffer with the injury troubles that have plagued them for much of this season.
Tyler Blackett, Paddy McNair and Tom Thorpe were all called into the United starting XI at various times this season by head coach Louis van Gaal, and, even though Kellet has just 51 minutes of Championship action to his name this term - with his Plymouth loan spell his most productive time - he could soon be turning out in the top flight.
However, judging by his only second tier performance, Kellet’s arrival will do little to bring defensive stability to the club.
According to WhoScored, the 21-year-old is statistically the worst player in the entire Championship, with his only game coming as a starter in a 4-2 loss to Rotherham.
Kellett started the game in a left-back position, and by the time he left the field in the 51st minute - his only minutes of action this season - his team were three goals down. He completed just one tackle whilst on the pitch, and failed to make a single interception, block or clearance - making his defensive impact incredibly minimal.
He also didn’t complete a single offensive action - although that is to be expected of a left-back - and was hauled off the pitch having been given the run around by a Rotherham side who are hardly incredible.
Kellet signing for United was one of the real shocks of the transfer window, with it coming completely out of the blue. He will likely be a fixture in the Under-21 ranks for the remainder of this season, but, if he is to be called upon to the first-team, United fans must surely hope that he shows a marked improvement upon his only ever Championship display.
