For some fans the arrival of the 23-year-old could have had the look of a loan deal, but the club announced they had agreed a deal with United, which allowed them to tie down the youngster on a three-and-a-half year contract.
Stuart Gray felt he needed something down the right hand side of his defence and Vermijl is a player who could make the difference.
His pace will allow him to get forward and put his opposition counterpart on the back foot, also creating a source of extra width for the side.
The worry for Wednesday is that he doesn’t have a great deal of experience, with his only loan move away from United being a short spell with NEC in Dutch football.
The Championship is an extremely competitive and physical league and another main worry will be that opposition sides could look to target him and take advantage of his inexperience, suggesting him as a weakness when sides prepare to face the Owls.
However, that’s where Gray needs to step in and earn his cash, working with the youngster to not only develop his defensive game, but improve his core strength so he becomes seen as a vital component in the team’s back four.
Here’s what Sheffield Wednesday fans made of the signing on Twitter.
Vermijl to Wednesday, good signing— Blair Kaylor (@BlairKaylor) February 2, 2015
The rationale that Darren Fletcher is a good signing because he's played for Man Utd bodes well for us signing Vermijl #logic— BroomOwl (@BroomOwl) February 2, 2015
Looks a decent signing Vermijl. Also sounds a bit of a character which is always good. #swfc— Tom Taylor-Batty (@TomTB1995) February 2, 2015
Top signing is Marnick Vermijl. Hear good things about him. Glad it's permanent too. Real statement of intent for club and players. #swfc— Andy Parsons (@andypars) February 2, 2015
