Poyet names the Sunderland star who 'needs' to play

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has confirmed Ricky Alvarez will play in the FA Cup against Fulham.

Gus Poyet has told the Shields Gazette Ricky Alvarez has to play in the FA Cup replay against Fulham.

Poyet has told the paper he feels it’s a good chance for Alvarez to get his head down, put in a positive performance and get some form under his belt.

“Ricky needs to play. He will play tonight. This is one change I will tell you,” said Poyet.

“I’m going to play him because he’s the type of player who need to play in certain games.”

It’s encouraging from the player’s point of view that the boss appears so open over the chance he’s willing to give him.

From Alvarez’s point of view, he has to get his head down, work hard and give Poyet a problem in terms of his team selection over the next few weeks.

Alvarez plays in a key position in behind the main striker or strikers and it’s a chance for Poyet to watch him and judge how he performs with an attack built around his game.

He’s made just two starts for the club this season, which came in the Premier League, and has been searching for his best form.

If he can fire this evening and impress, there’s a chance Poyet could keep him in the team as he looks for another exciting figure who can help the side as they look to pull clear of the bottom three.
