Jamie Redknapp impressed with Christian Eriksen’s free-kick skills

Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen has been superb with his free kicks recently.

Jamie Redknapp has been singing the praises of Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen’s free-kick skills in The Daily Mail.

Denmark international playmaker Eriksen is one of the best young players in the Premier League and is fast turning out to be one of the best free-kicks takers in the English top flight.

The 22-year-old scored a wonderful goal from a free kick against Sheffield United away from home in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday.

Then on Saturday against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in the Premier League, the former Ajax star scored yet another superb goal from a free kick.

Redknapp, a former Tottenham midfielder, is impressed with Eriksen’s ability, and has compared this particular skill of his to that of former Manchester United and Real Madrid star David Beckham.

“I love the way he takes them,” the 41-year-old wrote in The Daily Mail. “He is so relaxed and in control of his body and he can bend the ball into either corner.

“He hits it in quite an old-fashioned way - more David Beckham than Cristiano Ronaldo - and decides where to swerve the ball rather than hitting it and expecting it to move around itself.

“Free-kicks can be a game of cat and mouse with goalkeepers, but he is keeping the keepers guessing.”

Eriksen uses vision and guile rather than power on his free kicks, which are indeed aesthetically pleasing.

However, the youngster has not scored too many goals from such situations in the Premier League, just three in fact in 48 league appearances.

That should not detract anything from his calibre though, and he can certainly catch Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal international forward, now at Real Madrid, scored 11 free-kick goals in 196 Premier League appearances during his time at Manchester United.

Interestingly, Beckham could score just four more than Ronaldo despite playing 69 more top-flight matches in England.
