Celtic star Leigh Griffiths has revealed what Ronny Deila told him before the Old Firm derby against Rangers.
Celtic star Leigh Griffiths has been quoted by the BBC detailing the message he was given by Ronny Deila ahead of the Old Firm game against Rangers last weekend.
Griffiths got the opening goal in the game against Kenny McDowall’s team and has revealed he was extremely nervous heading into the huge clash.
“To score any goal in this game is important but to score so early settled everyone down,” he said.
“I was very nervous before the game but the manager told me to calm down and do my thing.”
Celtic boss Ronny Deila deserves a pat on the back for taking the sting out of such a big match for his players.
There would have been a few nervous Celtic players over the weekend and it’s significant that the manager addressed the need to take focus off of the occasion as quickly as possible.
It bodes well for the rest of the season as Celtic fight on multiple fronts for success.
While the atmosphere and build up to an Old Firm game is unique, Celtic’s players are going to get tense and nervous over the rest of the season for the League Cup final, important SPL games and the club’s Europa League adventure.
Deila should now use this positive result as motivation for when his players feel anxious before important games over the rest of the season.
The good news is he’s already proven to be effective in a difficult situation.
