Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has told the club’s website it’s massive for the team to be heading into the FA Cup game against Fulham on the back of a win.
Sunderland fought well to secure a 2-0 win against Burnley last weekend and will be the favourites for the game in London this evening, with Defoe insisting he’s looking forward to the match.
“I’m looking forward to it and it will be a good game, but it is massive to be heading into it on the back of a win because everyone will be full of confidence,” said Defoe.
“Hopefully we can go there and play because if we do we will create chances and I believe we are good enough to win the game.”
Gus Poyet’s preparation for the game would have been made slightly easier by the fact the Black Cats got a win against Burnley.
It’s likely to have given the players a lift and a bit of extra energy in training as opposed to the dip in morale, which can often follow a disappointing result.
Sunderland need to be wary this evening because Fulham will most likely start the game quickly, looking to try and catch the Black Cats on the back foot.
If Poyet can stress the need for the side to defend well early doors, then they should be confident of success in individual battles because they do have more quality in all areas, which should tell over 90 minutes.
