With Callum Robinson returning to Preston North End on loan before the transfer deadline, a sizeable number of Aston Villa fans were once again left puzzled at manager Paul Lambert’s handling of his development this season.
Robinson, 20, first joined the League One side on a month-long loan in mid-September, but his impressive attacking outings moved manager Simon Grayson to have his spell in the North West extended until the New Year.
The Promising striker netted five goals in 11 games during his Deepdale spell, including an FA Cup hat-trick against Havant & Waterlooville, but he was then recalled on November 25 after Darren Bent’s loan move to Brighton opened up a first-team spot.
Given his run of form, some fans expressed concern at the time over the decision to move him from regular football into a potential bench role, and their sentiment was compounded after the England Under-20 international failed to even see a minute of Premier League football over the coming months.
One of the club’s most exciting prospects, having made his senior debut in September 2013, Villa’s ongoing scoring troubles had led to calls for him to be given a chance to establish himself in the side, with Lambert failing to bring in another front man during the transfer window.
News of a Preston return amid the team’s run of 612 top-flight minutes without a goal has not gone down well, therefore, with the following being some of the Twitter reactions from supporters to his departure for the rest of the season.
I see, despite us not scoring any goals, we've sent Callum Robinson back to Preston !!! They kept that quiet !! #avfc— Hatchet (@AVFC_Hatchet) February 3, 2015
Villa logic: Struggling for goals, loan Robinson out then recall him to not sign a striker this transfer window and loan him out again #avfc— Henners (@H_David23) February 2, 2015
Any updates on #avfc ? I see Robinson has gone out. Makes his recall even more Bizzare.— o ƃ Ǝ ǝ ɥ ⊥ (@TheEgo74) February 2, 2015
So what was the point in recalling Robinson, Lambert you prick #avfc— Gary Swain (@gazswain) February 2, 2015
Have not scored in over 10 hours in the RL, let Robinson go and looks like no ST coming in, Yep that make perfect sense... dumbasses #avfc— Burhain Ghauri (@Brumknowsbest) February 2, 2015
All looks very quiet at Villa. To add to the madness, we have two strikers who score goals now out on loan in Bent & Robinson #avfc— Jay White (@jaywhite_1) February 2, 2015
Oh and remember that striker? Callum Robinson.. Well Lamberthhhh has sent him back out on loan In Lamberthhhh we trust #AVFC— Aston Villa News (@infoavfc) February 2, 2015
Trying to comprehend how Callum Robinson didn't get a minute of playing time whilst 10 hours with 0 goals went by over last 2 months. #avfc— Neil Fox (@FoxyN77) February 2, 2015
Why let Callum Robinson go on loan if we don't have a striker coming in. It seems mad to me.#avfc— craig steadman (@craigsteadman) February 2, 2015
Robinson to Preston?? We haven't scored for 10+ hours, and we send a striker out on loan!! #avfc— clive (@figarosdad) February 2, 2015
Logic would suggest Robinson going on loan would mean another coming in.But its #avfc ,no logic at all, else Lambert would've been sacked.— Leighton Castle (@LeightonCastle) February 2, 2015
