New Arsenal signing Gabriel Paulista has been speaking to the club’s official website about the fellow Brazilian whose influence he wants to replicate in North London.
The midfielder was a key player in Arsenal’s Invincibles side and Gabriel has explained just how highly he is rated in his homeland.
“He was a mirror for every Brazilian player and every child who looked up to Gilberto Silva as a reference,” the centre-back said.
“I want to be like him; to be able to do the most I can to help everyone.”
Gilberto made 240 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 24 goals and providing seven assists in that time.
He was an outstanding and consistent option in manager Arsene Wenger’s midfield and it is no surprise he is rated so highly in a country that recognises footballing talent when it sees it.
If Gabriel can ultimately replicate his countryman’s achievements in North London he is in for quite an experience, but for now he will simply be hoping to convince Wenger he deserves a regular starting spot ahead of either Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny.
If he plays to his full potential, Gabriel could become a firm fan favourite at Arsenal sooner rather than later, just as his hero once did.
