Arsenal morning round-up: Coquelin could have left, Mertesacker on backline

A round up of news stories this morning related to Arsenal.

The Daily Express has reported that Italian side Napoli made a deadline day move to sign Francis Coquelin.

Coquelin has been a key figure in Arsenal’s midfield in their last few games since returning from Championship club Charlton.

ESPN recently quoted Arsene Wenger as suggesting that Coquelin is almost certain to stay at the club for his long term future.

Per Mertesacker has told ESPN how thorough talks at Arsenal allowed the club to deal with their defensive problems.

The club have now secured four straight clean sheets, with the defence one of the most impressive areas of the current side.

He said the players and management had been talking constantly to try and find a way to get the most out of Arsenal’s backline.

Mertesacker has also been quoted by the Daily Telegraph suggesting Mesut Ozil’s best position is not on the wing.

Ozil has frequently found himself nudged out to the left hand side under Arsene Wenger to accommodate other players centrally.

Mertesacker has suggested the German needs to be more selfish.
