Report: West Ham eye surprise deadline day move for Newcastle defender Davide Santon

Upton Park

West Ham are reportedly eyeing up a move to sign Newcastle defender Davide Santon.

According to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United defender Davide Santon is a target for Premier League rivals West Ham United.

Santon, 24, joined Newcastle from Inter Milan back in 2011, having seen his career stall with the Italian giants before his move to Tyneside.

After a strong start to life at St. James' Park, Santon has again seen his development stalled, largely due to a number of injuries.

Recent reports have linked Santon with a surprise return to former club Inter, but it appears that there is interest closer to home.

The Shields Gazette, based in the North East, suggest that West Ham United are hoping to sign the Italian before tonight's transfer deadline.

The Hammers are enduring a defensive injury crisis right now, with Winston Reid, James Collins and Carl Jenkinson all in the treatment room.

Santon is predominantly a full back rather than a centre back, which is what the Hammers need, but it could suggest that Guy Demel may slide in to play centre back, or that Jenkinson's injury is a little more serious than first feared.

West Bromwich Albion have also been credited with an interest in Santon, who hasn't even played one minute of Premier League football this season - meaning he may well be rusty for some time yet, which will be a concern for interested teams.
