The Daily Echo has reported that Southampton’s plans to sign Filip Djuricic hang in the balance.
The Saints are reported to be in discussions with Benfica over the versatile midfielder, but is cagey over whether a deal will happen before the transfer deadline this evening.
The Echo states the transfer is complicated, most likely because he’s currently on loan at German club Mainz.
Ronald Koeman is reportedly keen to improve his midfield options, confirming in the Echo’s report that he is expecting to do business today.
However, whether Djuricic is the man who arrives at the Saints remains to be seen.
A number of knock on effects are most likely needed before the player can head to Southampton. The player would need to be released from Mainz before a deal could go through.
Midfield is one of the strongest areas of Southampton’s squad and it’s encouraging the boss is looking to maintain a high level of options in the middle of his team.
When one top quality player isn’t available, another can come in which bodes well for Southampton’s top four fight despite defeat at Swansea yesterday.
