According to a report in the Daily Mail, Southampton were hoping to pay in the region of £5million for the 20-year-old, with Ronald Koeman wanting to further strengthen an already impressive side.
However, it has now been reported by Sky Sports News that the has been shelved, leaving Southampton with little time to make any further additions should they so wish.
The channel continues to link Filip Djuricic with a loan move to St Mary’s, but with time running out there could be a nervous few hours ahead for Koeman and the Saints hierarchy.
Vilhena’s contract at Feyenoord expires in the summer of 2016 but it now appears he will remain there for at least a few more months.
He has made 96 appearances for the Dutch club’s senior side and previously turned out eight times for their under-21 side.
