Former Arsenal star Paul Merson suggested on Soccer Saturday for Sky Sports over the weekend that Harry Kane is the best player at Tottenham Hotspur.
Kane bagged a brace in the win against West Brom to take his goal tally up to 20, cementing his status as Tottenham’s top scorer.
“I think he’s now Tottenham’s top guy – they have some good players but he is the top man,” said Merson.
Kane’s consistency from an attacking point of view over the last couple of months has helped his team stay in and around the hunt for a top four place.
What makes him so effective in Tottenham’s attack is that he’s a very versatile striker and finds ways to be effective in the face of different sets of tactics coming from the opposition.
He can play centrally, he can play off to either side, he’s good enough to drop off and pick up possession and he can also play on the shoulder of a defence, as he looks to get in behind.
His challenge for the rest of the season is to stay grounded and it will be interesting to see how he copes as the pressure increases.
Mauricio Pochettino and the key leaders in Tottenham’s squad have big roles to play in terms of protecting him from that pressure and ensuring he keeps his targets and aims simple over the rest of the campaign.
His success creates attention and pressure, but if he can maintain his strike rate across all competitions, Tottenham will be in great shape at the end of the season.
