United transfer round-up: Defender tipped for Sheffield Wednesday; Marquinhos and Powell latest

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United are persisting in their alleged pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Marquinhos but could be left disappointed.

The report claims United have been trying to contact the Ligue 1 side regularly over the last week in an attempt to tie down an asking-price for the young Brazilian but that Laurent Blanc’s side have proved stubborn.

Given that any move for Marquinhos today would see PSG with little to no time to sign a replacement, the move does seem highly unlikely.

Marquinhos has made 22 appearances for the French champions this season and while United are in need of some quality defensive reinforcements, it appears they could miss out on this particular target.

In other news, the Daily Mail also reports that United right-back Marnick Vermijl looks likely to leave Old Trafford today, with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday linked with the Belgian.

The report claims Vermijl is expected to sign for the Owls before the window closes, and given that his current contract at United expires this summer and his lack of game-time thus far that would be no surprise.

The same report claims Nick Powell is expected to remain at United for the rest of the season, with manager Louis van Gaal allegedly keen to monitor the young midfielder’s progress up close.
