Garth Crooks impressed with Arsenal star Mesut Ozil’s performance v Aston Villa

Mesut Ozil’s performance for Arsenal on Sunday draws praise from former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks.

Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks has been singing the praises of Arsenal star Mesut Ozil on BBC Sport.

Germany international playmaker Ozil was the star of the show for the Gunners on Sunday, as they hammered Aston Villa 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old was the best player on the pitch, scoring one goal, providing one assist, having a pass accuracy of 87% and attempting seven dribbles.

It was one of Ozil’s best performances for Arsenal this campaign and demonstrated his ability to step up his game in the absence of Alexis Sanchez.

Crooks was impressed with the display of the 2014 World Cup winner and included the former Real Madrid star in his Team of the Week for BBC Sport.

“For all his undoubted quality, Mesut Ozil can sometimes wrongly give the impression that he lacks passion or desire,” the 56-year-old wrote on BBC Sport.

“I don't think I've ever come across a Germany international for whom that is true, but I have come across those with an extraordinary amount of talent, who won't be hurried or harassed and play the games on their terms.

“That was precisely how Ozil approached the match against Aston Villa - and helped destroy them in the process.”

Ozil’s performances at the start of the season were criticised, and indeed the German was underperforming.

Being deployed on the wing did not help the former Werder Bremen star either, and then he suffered a long-term knee injury.

Now back and fully fit, Ozil is starting to show the form that made him one of the world’s best creative midfielders.

A gifted playmaker with extraordinary vision for the final pass, the German now needs to step up and build on his display against Villa.

It would not be too wise to get carried away based on one great performance against a team struggling for survival in the Premier League, but Ozil is back with a bang.
