Davide Santon has announced on Facebook that he is leaving Newcastle United and moving to his former club Inter Milan.
The 24-year-old defender made the revelation earlier this morning following speculation that he will leave St. James’ Park in the January transfer window, as reported by The Shields Gazzette.
Italy international full-back Santon joined Newcastle from Inter in the summer of 2011 after falling down the pecking order at the 2010 Champions League winners.
Although the defender showed promising signs at Newcastle, this season he has struggled for form and with injuries.
Santon, who made as many as 27 Premier League appearances last season, has not played a single game in the the English top flight this campaign.
Newcastle have yet to confirm Santon’s departure, but given the player’s public announcement, it is only a matter of time before they do so.
One suspects that the Magpies will not sign anyone to replace Santon today as they are essentially letting go of a player for whom they had no need.
