Danny Murphy suggests change Paul Lambert could make at Aston Villa

Danny Murphy says Aston Villa should play more direct football.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT he feels Aston Villa need to play more direct football.

Paul Lambert’s team were well beaten at Arsenal yesterday and Murphy feels Villa need to try and change their style of play.

“I think they’ve got to do something differently – maybe be a bit more direct to take advantage of Benteke,” said Murphy.

“I don’t think this neat style of football suits them.”

Aston Villa are the lowest scorers in the Premier League this season and Murphy seems to feel that a different tactic can’t do any harm.

Benteke is well suited to dealing with a more direct style of play because he’s a big striker, has a good touch and is physically strong enough to hold the ball up, as his Villa teammates get into the game.

A more direct style will also mean Aston Villa are less vulnerable to the counter attack against quicker teams.

It’s arguable that playing more direct football and moving the ball forward quicker will give Villa more chances to score goals, but whether Lambert drops his philosophy in the middle of the season remains to be seen.

The side have to try and do something differently because there current methods clearly aren’t working. It might not be such a bad thing for the boss to take a risk with the club only three points above the bottom three.
