Bosnich suggests 'big risk' which Lambert needs to make to save Aston Villa

Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich says Paul Lambert has to change the team's style.

Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich told the Alan Brazil Sport Breakfast show for talkSPORT he feels Paul Lambert has to make a change at the club.

Villa were thumped 5-0 away at Arsenal on SUnday and Bosnich says Lambert has to mix things up or he can see the club being relegated from the Premier League.

“He needs a complete change in philosophy, which is a big risk in the middle of the season,” said the Australian.

“If nothing changes then I can definitely see Aston Villa going down.”

Aston Villa have 15 games left in their season and currently sit in 16th place, three points clear of the bottom three.

Arsenal were extremely comfortable with the way they moved the ball around and with how they protected possession yesterday, which made it difficult for Villa’s more creative players to get involved.

The problem seemed to be that Lambert wanted his team to be patient with their build up play, almost going head-to-head with Arsenal’s style, which meant there was only going to be one winner.

How Villa can change in terms of their style in such a short period of time is unclear, but after the flat performance against the Gunners, they don’t have much to lose.

Villa could go with a more direct approach or they could stick with a slicker style, with emphasis placed on pushing the full-backs forward and trying to get the ball into the playmakers and strikers as quickly as possible.

Villa are close to getting dragged into the basement battle and they could find it difficult to get out again once they’re in the bottom three.
