Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has backed Southampton to win against Swansea City today in his Sky Sports prediction column.
The 46-year-old believes that the Saints will bounce back from the defeat to Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup and pick up all three points from the Premier League clash at St. Mary’s Stadium.
“I'm going to go for Southampton,” Merson wrote on Skysports.com. “Admittedly they had a shocker last week but they're out of both of the cups now so they've got no excuse not to concentrate on the league.”
Merson’s prediction will be backed by many football followers, and indeed Southampton will head into today’s game as favourites.
Ronald Koeman’s side had a poor game against fellow Premier League outfit Palace at home last weekend, and the players will be determined to bounce back in style.
Southampton have been in this position before. Successive defeats to Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United a few weeks ago led to doubts over their top-four credentials.
However, the Saints have got their season back on track and are now very much in contention of a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.
Swansea, though, should not be underestimated. Despite conceding eight goals in their last two competitive games, manager Garry Monk has a competitive team at his disposal.
The Welsh outfit will be determined to return to winning ways today and move further up the league table. The Swans are currently 10th with 30 points from 22 matches.
