Real Madrid's Paul Clement comments on Raheem Sterling speculation

Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling has been linked with a move to Real Madrid on a number of occasions this season.

Real Madrid assistant manager Paul Clement says he isn’t surprised by the speculation linking the Spanish giants with a move for Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, the London Evening Standard report.

The England international has taken on the mantle with the Reds following the departure of Luis Suarez and the absence of Daniel Sturridge through injury.

He has started 20 Premier League games for Brendan Rodgers' side this season, scoring four goals and assisting a further five.

His development over the 18 months has been of significant note and rumours have begun to circulate over his future, with the Daily Star one of a number of media outlets linking the Liverpool starlet with a potential move to Real Madrid.

Italian boss Carlo Ancelotti’s renowned number two Clement, however, believes the speculation is baseless, pointing to the fact that Real have always been linked with Europe’s best young talent.

"Real Madrid are always going to be linked with some of the best players and also some of the best emerging young talents,” Clement explained.

“My understanding at the moment is that the club and manager's very happy with squad of players - we haven't got a big squad.”

“But it is a squad packed with quality and there are no current plans for ins and outs."

Sterling was at the centre of slight controversy over the festive period as boss Rodgers allowed him an extended rest to recover from presumed tiredness – a situation which drew much attention.

The Liverpool star's short break in the Caribbean, though, seems to have recharged his batteries, as he starred on his return to action at Aston Villa before scoring a sublime equaliser in the 1-1 Capital One Cup draw at home to Chelsea.

As Liverpool fans will no doubt attest, however, Sterling still has a lot of work to do with his finishing and when it comes to scoring 10-20 goals a season.
