Jermain Defoe has now got on the score-sheet for the first time since returning to England, as Sunderland’s new signing scored the second goal in their 2-0 win against Burnley.
The former Tottenham Hotspur player made his debut for the Black Cats against Mauricio Pochettino’s men earlier this month but he was unable to do what he normally does and score on his debut.
A blank in the FA Cup fourth round tie against Fulham followed, but he finally got his name on the score-sheet at the third time of asking.
Connor Wickham opened the scoring for Sunderland with 20 minutes on the clock and Defoe doubled the hosts’ advantage 11 minutes before half-time.
It was a vital goal that eased any lingering nerves at the Stadium of Light and proved Defoe has lost none of his effectiveness in front of goal.
Assisted by Patrick van Aanholt, Defoe was simply in the right place at the right time to knock home, and expect him to get plenty more in the months ahead.
