The defender suffered an awful looking head injury at the John Smiths Stadium.
Leeds United won their Yorkshire Derby with Huddersfield Town today, thanks to a late strike from Billy Sharp. The striker scored in the final minute to earn Leeds a 2-1 win and another crucial three points as they continue their current rich vein of form. But the goal and the game was severely marred by a horrific injury to Terriers defender Tommy Smith. The 22-year-old was knocked unconscious in a collision with his own goalkeeper, as he attempted to prevent Sharp from scoring the winner. The injury was so severe that Yorkshire Air Ambulance had to land on the pitch to fly him to Leeds General Infirmary.
"It looks like major head or neck trauma.
"I am shocked after seeing that. I made sure I saw him and his family and hopefully everything will be OK."
Of course the footballing world has been quick to offer their support to the stricken centre-back, even those that played against him for Leeds this afternoon.
Liam Cooper started the game at centre-back, with his new Leeds team-mate Sol Bamba.
While the Leeds player will undoubtedly be very pleased with the performance and the result he was also quick to wish Smith well in what looks like a long recovery.
Hopefully the injury will prove not to be as serious as first feared.
